History of Eikenhof

Eikenhof is a country home situated south of Mondeor, where the old Johannesburg – Vereeniging road crosses the Klip river.  It was the farm that belonged to Oom Christiaan Neethling; he claimed Volksraad member for Heidelberg in South Africa’s former Zuid-Afrikaanse Republiek Republic (ZAR).  During this time period it seemed like everyone wanted northward migration and when given an opportunity by his brother Dirk who had been working as wagon repairman at Kimberley, they decided to move further northwards too. After service repairing wagons near Kimberley during 1883-1884, Oom Christiaan eventually bought his property where he planted his bag full of acorns which he had brought with him from Stellenbosch.  This was the start of Eikenhof! (Court of Acorns!)
