Moving house checklist 2026: the free printable South African families actually use

Moving house is exciting and exhausting in equal measure. Whether you’re relocating across Meyerton or moving from Johannesburg to Cape Town, the logistics can overwhelm you if you don’t have a plan. This moving house checklist breaks the process into manageable weekly tasks — from eight weeks out to your first night in your new home.

Moving house checklist: 8 weeks before your move

• Start decluttering room by room. Donate, sell or discard items you haven’t used in a year.
• Research moving companies. Get at least three quotes. Look for 4.5+ star Google ratings and confirmed insurance. (Request a B&W Movers quote.)
• Notify your landlord (if renting) and check your lease’s notice period.
• Start a moving file: quotes, contracts, receipts, important contacts.
• If your children are changing schools, begin the enrolment process now.

House move checklist: 6 weeks out

• Confirm your moving date and book your chosen removals company.
• Start collecting packing materials or book a professional packing service.
• Notify your medical aid, insurance, bank and employer of your address change.
• Arrange for mail redirection with the South African Post Office.
• If moving to or from a complex, check the body corporate’s moving rules and book the lift if needed.

Moving home checklist: 4 weeks before

• Begin packing non-essential rooms: spare bedroom, garage, storage room.
• Label every box with contents AND destination room.
• Arrange cancellation or transfer of municipality services (water, electricity, refuse).
• Transfer or cancel your alarm monitoring, internet and DSTV.
• Take readings of electricity and water meters at both properties.

House moving checklist: 2 weeks before

• Confirm your move date, arrival time and crew size with your movers.
• Pack the kitchen (keep one box of essentials — kettle, mugs, plates for the last few days).
• Disassemble furniture that needs tools (or arrange for your movers to do this).
• Clean out the fridge and start using up frozen food.
• Prepare a "moving day essentials" box: toiletries, chargers, medications, snacks, change of clothes, important documents.

Moving checklist: the day before

• Defrost the fridge (at least 24 hours before the move).
• Disconnect the washing machine and drain the hoses.
• Charge all devices and keep chargers in your essentials box.
• Confirm parking and access at both addresses.
• Get a good night’s sleep. Tomorrow is going to be a big day.

Moving day

• Be ready when the crew arrives. Show them around and point out fragile or heavy items.
• Do a final walkthrough of every room, cupboard, shed and garden store.
• Take electricity and water meter readings.
• Lock up and hand over the keys.
• At the new place, direct the crew room by room. Check items off as they’re unloaded.

First week in your new home

• Unpack essentials first: kitchen, bathroom, bedrooms.
• Check that all services are connected: electricity, water, internet, alarm.
• Update your address with the remaining institutions: gym, subscriptions, online shopping accounts.
• Flatten and recycle packing boxes.
