How much does it cost for furniture removals?
By [REAL_AUTHOR_NAME] · Updated August 2026 · ~12 min read
If you’re planning a move in South Africa, the first question on your mind is almost certainly: how much is this going to cost? The honest answer is that it depends — on the size of your home, how far you’re moving, access at both ends, and whether you want the movers to pack for you or just load and go.
This guide breaks down every factor that affects the price of furniture removals in South Africa, gives you typical cost ranges (clearly marked as estimates for you to verify), and explains how to read a moving quote so you know exactly what you’re paying for.
Important note on pricing
The price ranges in this article are indicative estimates based on general South African moving industry patterns. B&W Movers does not publish fixed prices — every move is different. For an accurate, obligation-free quote, contact us directly or use our cost calculator.
What affects the cost of furniture removals?
1. Volume — how much are you moving?
The more furniture and belongings you have, the bigger the truck needed and the more crew hours required. A bachelor flat is fundamentally different from a four-bedroom house with a double garage. Volume is typically the biggest single factor in your quote.
2. Distance — local vs long-distance
A move within the same suburb in Gauteng costs significantly less than a Johannesburg-to-Cape Town relocation. Local moves are typically priced as a flat rate based on volume, while long-distance moves add per-kilometre charges and may include accommodation for the crew.
3. Access at both addresses
Stairs add time. Narrow corridors add difficulty. Complexes with lift bookings and time restrictions add coordination. If the truck can’t park within 20 metres of the front door, a "long carry" surcharge may apply. Ground-floor, single-storey homes with a driveway are the simplest (and cheapest) to move.
4. Packing
If you pack yourself, the quote covers loading, transport and unloading. If you use a professional packing service, that’s an additional cost — but it significantly reduces damage risk and saves you days of work.
5. Storage
If your move-out and move-in dates don’t align, you may need short-term storage. This is priced separately, typically per unit per week or month.
6. Time of year and day of week
Month-end, school holidays and the December–January period are peak moving times. Demand is higher, availability is tighter, and some companies charge premium rates. Mid-week, mid-month moves are generally the most affordable.
7. Special items
Pianos, pool tables, safes, aquariums and large artwork require specialist handling and sometimes additional crew or equipment. These are typically quoted as line-item extras.

How to read a moving quote
A good moving quote should be clear, written and itemised. Here’s what to look for:
- Base rate: The cost for the truck, crew and standard move time.
- Extras: Packing, storage, stairs surcharge, long carry, weekend/after-hours rates.
- Insurance: What’s covered, what’s not, and the excess amount.
- Payment terms: Deposit requirements, accepted payment methods, cancellation policy.
- What’s NOT included: Make sure you know what isn’t covered before moving day.
B&W Movers provides a clear, written quote with all items disclosed upfront. No hidden fees, no surprises on the day.
How to keep your moving costs down
- Declutter before you move. Every item you don’t move saves space, weight and time. Sell, donate or discard what you no longer need.
- Self-pack non-fragile items. Pack clothing, linen and books yourself. Leave the fragile and awkward items to the professionals.
- Choose a mid-week, mid-month date. Demand is lower, and you may secure a better rate.
- Book early. Last-minute moves limit your options and may cost more.
- Get multiple quotes. Compare at least three movers, but don’t choose on price alone — check reviews, insurance and track record.
- Be clear about access. Tell your movers about stairs, lifts, narrow passages and parking restrictions upfront. Surprises on moving day cost everyone time and money.
